A Brilliant Mind, but Outside Nigeria’s Grip

Alli comes from Ileogbo in Osun State, and he’s now leading a cutting-edge project at Cambridge — one of the most respected science departments in the world. His research? Developing advanced photocatalysts that can convert harmful CO₂ emissions into usable fuel. In other words: turning pollution into energy. That’s not science fiction — that’s future-building.

But here’s the catch: Nigeria didn’t build the ladder he climbed. His fellowships and financial backing came from Qatar, South Africa, the Netherlands, and the United States. His research labs are in Cambridge and Spain. He succeeded not because Nigeria invested in him early, but because the rest of the world saw what we refused to.

Why Alli’s Success Should Sting

This isn’t about congratulating him; it’s about facing a national truth: we only celebrate when someone else says “well done” first. We pat him on the back now, but we didn’t put a stable structure under his feet when it mattered. And his story isn’t an outlier — it’s a symptom.

TETFund, the go-to public agency for university research funding, has spent over ₦23 billion across about 912 projects. That’s something — until you realize 912 projects across a whole country with more than 66 research institutes means the money is stretched ridiculously thin.

They’re even building 18 innovation hubs across Nigeria for things like robotics, 3D printing, and AI. But we need more than hubs — we need a functional, well-capitalized national research funding agency, not just stop-gap solutions.

Experts agree: Nigeria must bridge the gap between academia and industry so research doesn’t just sit on a shelf. It’s about commercializing ideas, protecting intellectual property, and building real economies around science — not just paper publications.
